The Feldenkrais Method is a technique used to ease body aches and body pains and to improve the posture of the body. It was first developed and used by Dr. M. Feldenkrais. The basic principle behind it is the use of sensory motor learning as a way to improve posture habits with the goal of attaining a more dynamic well being.
The practitioners of the Feldenkrais Method use calming touch and gentle movement to help people discover and achieve their most comfortable movement patterns that will free them from physical pains and restrictions. Most people who have tried this method testify of increased vitality and decreased stress. They also experience more pleasurable movements of the joints and muscles. Positive results have also been achieved through the use of the Feldenkrais Method on patients suffering from arthritis, back pain, aches on the feet and the knees, carpal tunnel syndrome, and neuralgia.
In terms of performance, the Feldenkrais Method is very effective in such sports and endeavors such as horseback riding, golf, swimming, tennis, martial arts and boxing, skiing, and even weight training. The Feldenkrais Method does not only improve performance of athletes in these sports, it also improves the enjoyment capabilities of regular people who indulge in these activities.
There are two main approaches that make up the Feldenkrais Method. The first one is called the Functional Approach. This approach is a hands-on technique. It is an approach that is highly individual in nature and therefore yields the most learning and improvement for the patient. Because this type of approach allows for patients to receive the Feldenkrais Method while lying comfortably on a fully padded table, patients find it to be as pleasurable as a well applied massage.
The benefits of this type of approach of the Feldenkrais Method include better posture and coordination, improved flexibility, and soothed pain from the neck, knees, and other joints. Furthermore, this approach also allows for the whole session to be tailor made for the specific needs of different individuals.
The second approach used for the Feldenkrais Method is the ATM or the Awareness Through Movement approach. This is usually used in a group setting as opposed to the individual setting used in the Functional Approach. In this approach, the group is guided through a succession of movements that are grouped together according to a functional action. The participants in this approach are taught to engage their whole body into the performance of the action. This ultimately results in the participants being able to elegantly and effortlessly engage themselves in the movement. This approach of the Feldenkrais Method also helps to improve balance and flexibility, build up coordination, and enhance awareness. Due to these benefits, this approach is very much suited for people who regularly engage in riding activities such as horseback riding or motorcycle riding. It is also very beneficial for equestrians and other professionals that have a great need for very good balance and coordination.
Both approaches of the Feldenkrais Method are suitable and effective for everyone regardless of athletic abilities or physical conditions.
