Music and exercise

Music and exercise

One of the biggest impediments for people to continue an exercise program is boredom.  Doing exercises can easily lose its appeal especially when it is done for an extended period of time.  This is especially so when the desired results are not immediately seen or achieved.  In order to get around this difficulty, it is best to make exercise fun.  The the best way to put fun into any exercise program is to incorporate some music into it.

Music goes well with exercise because they are both good for the body as well as the mind.  Music can and does offer a lot of stress relief and so does exercise.  In other cases, music and exercise complement each other.  Music invigorates the psychological aspect of your well being while exercise takes care of your physical health.  Music can be the motivation that will keep your exercise exciting and entertaining.

Music is a great complementary activity to exercise in several ways.  First of all, it helps a great deal in preventing the mind from thinking about the monotonous activity of the exercise.  It distracts the mind from prematurely focusing on the exhaustion that the body might be feeling and therefore it increases the exercise performance of the body.  It also keeps the mind from thinking about all of the other things that might give you reason to stop doing your work-out such as the heat, the sweat, and the boredom.

Secondly, music can play a big role in preparing you psychologically for the exercise at hand.  For example, upbeat and rhythmic music can help to a great extent in preparing for an intense muscle building work out or exercise.  These exciting types of music get you pumped up and eager to get on the treadmill or the stationary bike and start melting those calories away.  They can get you energized with their beat and they can get you fired up with their lyrics.  Slow and soft music on the other hand, is very useful when doing calm exercises such as yoga and stretching.  Just remember that you have to choose the right music for the kind of exercise that you intend to do for it to become an effective exercise tool.

A third advantage of using music during exercise is the ability of music to get you in rhythm while doing the exercise.  Doing an exercise in rhythm makes it a lot easier and a lot more fun.  It makes the exercise feel more natural and therefore it coaxes the body to fluidly go through the motions without being forced to.  When the body is doing an activity naturally rather than forcefully, it performs a lot more efficiently and a lot less haggardly.  This will ultimately result in longer times doing the exercise and therefore a better outcome will be achieved.

Whatever exercise you are into, be it aerobics, running, cross country cycling, or weightlifting, adding music to your program will definitely be a big boon.  It will help you get better results and it will make your gym visits an occasion you will be looking forward to.
