Stretch marks are scars on the skin that occur when the body undergoes a rapid increase in size and then rapidly decreases in size again. This hasty change causes the dermis, the inner layer of the skin, to tear and rupture. These ruptured fibers of the dermis become the scars that eventually show up as stretch marks on the affected area. There are many different choices when it comes to treating and eliminating stretch marks. The effectiveness of these methods however also differs a great deal. Factors such as the severity of the stretch marks, your age, how “old” the stretch marks are, and even your current diet, can all affect the success or failure of any stretch mark removal method.
The most common and simple method that is used in treating stretch marks is the massage and cream method. This is a simple method and can be done by your self with just the help of readily available moisturizers or lotions. The main purpose of this method is to remove stretch marks by eliminating the layers of the skin one thin layer at a time and then helping the skin grow back to its healthy and stretch mark free condition. The massage part is the one responsible in taking the layers off. The moisturizers meanwhile, take care of the regeneration of the skin. Always carefully read the labels and ingredients of the creams you choose for this purpose. They might contain components that will adversely affect the outcome of your treatment, especially if you are allergic to some of them. Of course, this implies that this method will take some time to provide any results because of the time it takes to remove the layers and then to let the body replace them. Furthermore, the success of this method is also greatly dependent on how well you are able to massage the area to effectively exfoliate the skin. Doing it too slowly or too lightly can end up not having any effect at all. Overdoing the massage on the other hand, can end up adding to the scars that are already present on the skin.
Another method that can be used to eliminate the stretch marks on the skin is cosmetic laser treatment. This is a fairly new method of removing stretch marks. This method involves using lasers on the skin to help stimulate the growth of the collagen in the skin. The increase in the collagen will help remove the stretch marks by “filling in” the scars from within the skin itself. The laser is absorbed by the dermis of the skin which initiates the production of new collagen. Just like any other method of stretch mark removal, it is best to use cosmetic laser treatment as early as possible. The older the scar of the stretch mark is, the more difficult it will be to fill it in with new collagen and therefore the more difficult it will be to eliminate.
Whichever method you choose to use, always remember to consult your physician first.
