Sports massage

Anyone involved in strenuous work that pushes their body to physical limits will get a lot of benefits from a good and well applied massage.  Massages are great help in caring for minor injuries and are also very helpful in dampening the effect of wear and tear on the muscles of the body.  Massages make for a very good complement to an exercise program or an athletic training work out.

A sports massage is a type of massage that was specifically developed to care for the types of therapy that an athlete’s body needs.   It involves stimulating the blood flow around the strained body of an athlete.  It also uses some therapy movements that loosen the knots in the muscles of the body while at the same time increasing the range of motion of joints and increasing the maximum stretch limits of ligaments.

There are several types of sports massages available.  These are classified according to the purpose of the massage or to the goal it wants to achieve.

The pre-game sports massage is usually given to an athlete less than an hour before the actual sports event.  Thus it is a short and fast kind of massage.  It is intended to stimulate and warm up the major parts of the muscles that will be most stressed during the course of the game.  This pre-game massage is very important in preparing the body for the game and it is also very important in helping prevent the athlete from suffering injuries.

The post-game sports massage is given to the athlete no more than 2 hours after the game has concluded.  It is given to the athlete to help him relax his muscles and relieve the tension that has built up within them.  It is also used to relieve any soreness that might have cropped up during the game.  The post-game sports massage is very important in calming the muscles and in bringing the tissues, tendons, and ligaments of the body to a relaxed state in a slow and stress free manner.

The maintenance sports massage is given to athletes who are undergoing strength training and over all body conditioning.  It helps the body of the athlete cope with the intense work outs and the stressful exercises.  It helps in allowing the athlete to work on his training harder and to keep him going longer. It also helps in minimizing the strain that the muscles undergo during training thus allowing more training time for the athlete.

The rehab sports massage is given to athletes that are trying to recuperate from injuries that they have suffered.  It helps in relieving some of the pain that the injuries cause.  It also helps in nursing the body of the athlete back to full health.

Although the sports massage was initially developed for professional level athletes, even regular weekend athletes can benefit form this kind of massage too.  It is very effective for those who have just a specific problem area that needs some sort of therapy or for those who want to be better prepared for their next bout on the court with friends.
