The erroneous belief that women should do only aerobics

There are a host of exercises that are great for women.  It is totally erroneous to believe that women should do only aerobics.

There are a couple of reasons why this belief is erroneous.  First, although aerobics is a great exercise, it cannot provide everything that the body needs in terms of physical development.  Second, other exercises do not necessarily cause women to “bulk up” and develop large muscles.

Aerobic exercises are great for cardiovascular fitness.  These exercises strengthen both the lungs and the heart. They are also great for burning off calories.  This makes aerobics great for those who are looking to improve their weight.  Aerobics are also great for improving mood, combating or managing stress, and lowering blood sugar levels.

But aerobic exercises cannot do everything.  They are not very useful in maintaining some of the muscles of the body.  Most women want to tone their body.  This is usually the goal when women start an exercise program or regimen.  Aerobic exercise is not enough to provide the best results in toning.  It needs to be complimented with other exercises.

The best exercises to compliment aerobic exercises for women are combo exercises.  These exercises are several exercises executed in conjunction with each other.  These are great for women because they target several muscle groups at once.  With more muscle groups working, there will be no isolated hulking muscles that will develop.  Furthermore, combo exercises are very effective in increasing metabolism.  Faster metabolism is great for burning fat and for losing weight.  Combo exercises also take a lot less time to accomplish than individual exercises.

An example of a combo exercise is the lunge combined with the shoulder press.  This is a very good combo exercise because it works many muscle groups.  It works the glutes, the hamstrings, and the quadriceps.  It also works the thighs, the shoulders, and the triceps.  Another great aspect about this exercise is its versatility.  The lunge with shoulder press combo is usually done from a stationary position but it can also be done while walking.  If there is enough space, it is better to perform this exercise while walking.  With walking incorporated into the movement, it becomes a toning exercise as well as an aerobic exercise.

The fear of developing large, masculine muscles is one of the main reasons why many women believe they should only do aerobics.  But it is not the exercises themselves that develop large muscles but the number of repetitions and sets that they are done.  For example, the bench press may not seem to be a good exercise for women, but it is. Of course, this requires that the exercise is done properly and in the right amount.

The bench press works different large muscle groups which make it a great toning exercise.  With the right repetition and set scheme, it can be very effective in toning the body.  The same goes for exercises such as the seated row.  These exercises work multiple muscles and multiple joints as well.
