Tobacco: there are enough reasons to quit smoking

A lot of smokers always say “I will quit”, but only a few of them do.  From the few who quit smoking, fewer really did quit for life, and others went back to their habit.  When will this smoking addiction stop?  When will these people realize that it is harmful not just for them but for others as well?  When will these people realize that smoking won’t do them any good?  It would take time, since a lot of smokers still believe in some of the smoking myths and beliefs that have long been debunked.

Myth #1: I hurt no one but myself when I smoke.  This myth is false.  Did smokers know that second hand smoking is as dangerous as, or even more than, firsthand smoking?  I bet they do not.  This is the top reason why pregnant women and men with kids are discouraged to smoke.  It is because a lot of children suffer from SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome due to their exposure in tobacco smoke.  For the animal lovers, your dogs and cats can get lung cancer or emphysema by just inhaling the smoke coming out of your sticks.  A lot of children and pets die each year, and it is time to at least think about them first before you light up that cigarette.

Myth #2: I am sure to gain weight when I quit smoking.  Smoking is the best diuretic.  Again, this is not true.  The truth is that you’ll lose more weight when you quit.  How is this so?  When you smoke, you can’t work nor run nor jog nor even climb up the stairs for a little over 20 to 30 minutes.  You get easily tired and you have to stop while your body circulates blood as fast as it can to replenish oxygen inside your system.  You do things slower each time, and you always need to take a quick rest before doing another activity.  On the other hand, quitting can give you more energy to do more activities, like sports and exercises, which not only can keep you healthy and fit but also lead you to the good path and not to the dark side of smoking.

Myth #3: I can stop anytime I want.  The answer is no, you cannot.  Smokers would say “I would quit when I start working” or “I’ll quit when I get pregnant”, and most often than not they do not mind and accomplish their promises.  These statements of promise are often gone with the wind.  Nicotine is the most addictive substance in tobacco, and nicotine addiction cannot be stopped just like that.  They say that when you quit smoking, you have to do it one step at a time for your body to adjust.  If you know that quitting will take time then why not start now?  Quit now.  Now is the perfect time to do so – not tomorrow, not next year, not when you have no more money left on your pocket, nor when you have no one to care for you at all.

Yes, there are enough reasons to quit smoking.  The clock is ticking – it is time to do so.
