The Risks of Overhydration

Health is no less than a state of physiological balance. Basically, it is the equilibrium that manifests inside and out. As it aims at achieving balance, having too much of something is as terrible as lacking too much of something. Unfortunately, people are likely to be focused on what they lack. They are so much into the idea of deficiency that they fail to recognize the fruit of their labour once it pops. No doubt, you would be better off with the Wednesday group that is never late nor early.

One of the most deceptive health culprits involving internal imbalance is overhydration. In fact, you might not have seen it coming for only the symptoms can tell. Common signs include confusion, dizziness, headache, and irritability. Just a word of caution, these symptoms can be confused with typical cases of discomfort that can happen anytime. That means you should be mindful of your water intake as well as water release to be able to put the blame on water intoxication.

Overhydration happens when you put in so much amount of water that you weren’t able to release. When the body holds too much water, some sort of sodium imbalance occurs between the cells and the niche. The surrounding niche becomes diluted while the cells are left concentrated with solutes. To combat the disturbance, fluids are directed towards the cells with higher solute concentration. That sums up the process called osmosis which is a normal biological response.

Will the osmotic movement be enough to restore the balance? It looks like osmosis might have stabilized the variance in solute levels but not the cellular structures. Instead, it might have aggravated the problem thereby causing the cells to swell. Swollen cells can disrupt the normal functioning of internal organs at the cellular level. Adverse effects range from unstable pulse pressure to blood flow interruption.

Among others, brain cells are mostly susceptible to overhydration. Although that is the case, your brain cells can normally adapt to the fluid increase given ample time for stabilization. That means critical scenarios are likely to arise when water intoxication comes in a drop of a hat.  The effects can even be crucial when swollen brain cells bring out heightened pressure into the cranium. In worst case scenarios, the brain stem might give into the pressure that would eventually renders the nervous system dysfunctional.

Most likely, athletes fall prey into water poisoning confronted by the desire to manage their weight. The human body is 50 to 80 percent water. That means body water accounts for most of the pounds you gain. Marathon runners, who are weight perfectionists, are inclined to drink more water whenever they tip the scale less. On the other hand, they tend to consume less water if they need to lose some extra pounds.

As a rule of thumb, you should definitely watch what you drink, too! You might be consuming too much water that your body cannot hold. There are also instances when overhydration arises as a consequence of dysfunctional vital organs. For instance, the kidneys may not be able to release normal amount of water out of the system. In any case, water intoxication merits a visit to your physician for prompt treatment.
