Goji Berries: the Tibetan wisdom

Consistent great performance is what every sport athlete needs to accomplish in order to attain greatness in one’s chosen sport.  For many who have succeeded in accomplishing their goal, sacrifices have been made to ensure physical supremacy.

 Nutrition has always been a key factor.  If one wants to get serious in sports, then know the appropriate available diet and taking it in a regular manner should be a tall order.

Sports nutrition is the base in enhancing an athlete’s performance.  Body composition is primarily improved.  When that is achieved, an increase in quickness, mobility and strength follows.  Afterwards, it will help the body to recover faster, giving the athlete more capacity for practice, workout and competition.  Next, an increase in energy results to improved performance.  Lastly, an overall health improvement is developed as immunity increases upon continued diet and exercise.

Sports athletes are known to take a lot of dietary supplements psychologically enhancing their performance.  One way to be sure about your dietary supplement is to study the components and effects of the substance.

A very popular supplement which is backed by scientific clinical studies is available in the health food market.  It is commercially known as Goji Berry, sometimes also called as Tibetan Goji or Himalayan Goji.  Goji Berries are actually from the plant wolfberry.  It is mainly native to Asia, particularly in the Himalayan valleys of China, Mongolia, Tibet and some parts of south-eastern Europe.  For thousands of years already, traditional Chinese folk medicine uses them to prevent and cure a number of diseases.  They have also been used as ingredients for some native dishes.  Aside from eating the berries, the juice is also taken as a drink or combined with tea to make a tonic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture developed a test called Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC).  Goji berries have very high ORAC values, higher than most fruits and vegetables.  It is for this reason that Goji berries marketers are making bold claims on its medicinal values.  Since Goji berries provide more antioxidants than any other fruit and contains lots of B vitamins, it is believed to even cure cancer by protecting against harmful free radicals which causes damages in body cells.

 They are incredibly nutritious with lots of Vitamin C, beta carotene, potassium and iron.  Beta carotene helps fight heart disease and protects the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.  Goji berries are also very rich in polysaccharides that help boost the immune system and said to contain 18 kinds of amino acids.  They also help control the appetite and blood sugar.  It is no wonder that people have associated Goji berries in boosting sexual functions and keeping people looking and feeling young.

It has been found out that Goji berries help in converting food into energy as opposed to being stored as fat.  It also produces growth hormones that help keep the body lean.  Overall physical performance is achieved by improving the utilization of oxygen, increasing endurance and stamina, improving the circulation, strengthening the heart and by reducing stress or delaying the onset of fatigue.  It also stimulates the regeneration of body tissues.  

For athletes or simply for sports-minded people, Goji berries can be a big help in achieving their goals.
