Visit a herbal shop

Herbs and herbal supplements have grown in popularity in recent years.  More and more people are trying out these natural remedies as a substitute for pharmaceutical pills.  Thus there are more people visiting herbal shops and trying out a lot of the different kinds of herbal supplements available.

There are people that swear by the results what that they have achieved with these herbal supplements and most of them are probably true. However, just because an herbal supplement works for one person, does not mean it will work the same way for everybody else.  Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, these herbal supplements do not undergo strict testing by agencies such as the FDA.  It is only required that manufacturers of these herbal supplements have supporting research of their own about the effectiveness of the product and any other claims they might have.  Thus, it is a good idea to buy herbal supplements that have been made by a reputable manufacturer.

These manufacturers are required however, to GMPs or “Good Manufacturing Practices” during their production of these herbal supplements.  This will somewhat make the production process of the supplements a bit more consistent and it will also keep the quality of the products at a higher rate than it otherwise would be without these GMPs.

When visiting a herbal shop, it is important to always carefully read the label on the supplement that you are thinking of trying.  Make sure that the label is complete.  It should have information about the complete name of the supplement and also the name and address of the manufacturer and/or the distributor of the product.  There should also be a complete list of the ingredients used in the production of the herbal supplement.  You should also find the serving size of the supplement and the active ingredient that is used in it.  Lastly, there should be clear instructions regarding the use and dosage for the product.

Before trying any herbal supplement though, it is a good idea to first consult with your doctor.  This is especially true if you are currently taking other prescription medication.  There are a lot of herbs that do not react well to some drugs and they can cause several serious side effects.

Caution should also be observed when using herbs and herbal supplements in pregnant women. The ingredients might seem harmless to normal adults but there can always be adverse effects on the fetus.  For most situations, it is best for pregnant women to refrain from taking any type of supplement, whether it is herbal or not.

Remember to read and follow the instructions for taking any herbal supplement.  Do not in any situation exceed the dosage that has been indicated on the label.  You also should not take the herbal supplement for a period longer than what has been recommended.

When you have decided on which herbal supplement to try, it is best to try it on its own and not in conjunction with other supplements.  This is the best way to find out if it is really effective for you or if it is causing any negative side effects.  Take note of how your body reacts to it in a given period of time and make sure you are not over doing it.
