Protein supplements: which one to choose?

Anyone can get a lot of benefits from adding protein supplements to their daily diet. Protein is one of the 3 major macronutrients that the body needs on a regular basis.  The two other macronutrients that the body needs are fats and carbohydrates.

People who take part in very intense and very rigorous cardio exercises and those who take serious weight training workouts have a very high need for protein supplements.  In order for these people to be able to recover properly and quickly from the physical stress and the muscle burn endured through these extensive exercises they need to have a good dose of post workout protein and carbohydrate shake or cocktail.  Many researches have reached the conclusion that a protein and carbohydrate drink, usually mixed in a 1:4 ratio, is very effective in helping the body recover quickly after exercise of other heavy physical activity.  Taking the protein and carbohydrate supplement in liquid form is far better than in solid form because the body can absorb liquids faster than it can absorb solids.  Thus, having a protein enhanced drink after a workout will help the body start its recovery process a lot earlier which is very important.

Just like very intense exercises and workout routines, a fast paced and very active lifestyle can also lead to muscle breakdown and muscle fatigue.  This is another instance where a good protein supplement will benefit the body greatly.  Living a very active lifestyle means that the body is burning a lot more proteins for energy than the average man or woman next door.  It also means therefore that the body will need more proteins to burn.  With a very active lifestyle, it is very rare that a normal diet will have the amount of proteins needed by the body.  More often than not, the body will end up with a protein deficiency which will make the body weaker and less able to cope with various activities.  A protein supplement is the best solution to this situation.

There are several kinds of protein supplements that you can choose from.  The most useful one that you can use for a post workout drink is the protein isolate.  This kind of protein supplement works best for post workout recovery drinks because it is tasteless and it does not thicken or otherwise alter the consistency of the base liquid that you mix it in.  You can mix it into your favorite flavored juice or water and it will taste just the same as when you did not add any protein isolate supplement into it.  Furthermore, protein isolates are the kinds of protein supplements that can easily be absorbed by the body because it is easily digested.

Another kind of protein supplement is the protein concentrate.  Among the different kinds of protein supplements, this is the most popular one due to the fact that is has a low lactose content and is also easy to digest.

Casein is the protein supplement that is best used if the primary reason for taking the protein supplement is to build muscle.  Casein protein is harder to digest than the other kinds of protein which is why it is more suited for long term protein use such as in muscle building.
