Athletes strive for longevity; this is what every athlete wanted for them to stay in their field. Longevity is a basic sport term that refers to a considerably long biological life of an athlete. In this context, longevity is used in a sports context. This plays a crucial role in the life of an athlete for this demonstrates the ability of a particular individual to play in his particular field of athletic activity over an extended period of time.  

Longevity and other sports concepts

The concept of longevity in sports is commonly juxtaposed with various related concepts. Longevity will be best understood if it is contrasted with other sports science concepts. One of this is health – this is a necessary aspect to consider the existence of longevity.

Health is a broad term that includes as such and thus, the wellness of being of an individual will determine his capacity to engage in strenuous activities for longer periods of time.

Aside from health, fitness is also a concept that is closely related to longevity. For you to be able to achieve as such, you have to maintain an optimal physical condition and  physical fitness. Physical fitness is a long-term project and as such, you need a considerable amount of time. By this, it is implied that poor fitness does not go along with athletic longevity.

Moreover, it is a common fact that athletes who achieve longevity in sports are those who never experienced any injury during the course of their careers. Hence, the adage goes true that you have to protect yourself at all times in any field of athletic and sports activity that you chose.

Factors affecting longevity

There are various factors that contribute to the achievement of longevity in sports. First, proper diet is important for longevity to exist. You have to maintain a well-balanced diet everyday for you to be able to perform well in any sports activity for a longer period of time. A well-balanced diet contributes to the necessary nutrients your body needs for you to perform well.

Next is the factor of total fitness. Total fitness refers to the maintenance of a healthy body, without much fluctuation in body weight and physical activities. Lastly it is necessary to maintain healthy mental and emotional state. You have to avoid stressful activities so that you can concentrate on your activities. These factors are crucial in determining the longevity of an individual in sports.

There are a handful of known athletes who were able to maintain longevity in their careers as sportsmen and athletes. One of the most notable is Michael Jordan and Jason Kidd of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Zenidine Zedane in the world of soccer. They were able to keep up with their sports even at an age of thirty and above.

Longevity is an important factor in every athlete’s life. You have to achieve a physically fit body to achieve and maintain longevity. Nevertheless, you have to keep in mind that longevity does not come in handy. One has to be aware the need for time and patience in pursuit for such.
